About the Firm

The Law Offices of Ruth I. Major, P.C. is a litigation boutique representing employees, executives, and professionals in employment and business disputes. Our work covers discrimination, harassment, retaliation, whistle blower, wage, contract, and defamation claims, as well as executive separation agreements and partnership disputes. We litigate in the Circuit Court of Cook County, other Illinois state courts, federal court, and before the IDHR and EEOC.

We are a small firm. Associates do real work from day one: they handle substantive assignments directly, have regular contact with clients, and work closely with the principal attorney.

The Position

We are looking for an associate attorney with at least two years of litigation experience to support and increasingly manage matters from intake through resolution. The right candidate writes well, is comfortable in court, performs well under pressure and tight deadlines, and can take an assignment and run with it.

Responsibilities
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and responses in state and federal court
  • Handle written discovery, document review, and discovery disputes, including Rule 201(k) conferences and motions to compel
  • Prepare for and take or defend depositions
  • Draft demand letters, settlement correspondence, and separation and release agreements
  • Prepare charges and position-statement responses before the IDHR and EEOC
  • Appear at status hearings, motion calls, and other court proceedings
  • Research and analyze employment and litigation issues under federal and Illinois law
  • Meet with clients, develop case chronologies, and evaluate claims
  • Help prepare for mediation, arbitration, and trial
Qualifications

Required

  • J.D. and license to practice in Illinois, in good standing
  • At least two years of litigation experience
  • Excellent research and writing skills, with writing samples that show it
  • Experience with written discovery and motion practice
  • Sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage deadlines across several matters
  • Ability to work well under pressure, stay composed during fast-moving litigation, and turn around high-quality work on short notice
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take ownership of assignments in a demanding, small-firm environment

Preferred

  • Experience in employment law (plaintiff or defense), such as Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, the Illinois Human Rights Act, the Illinois Whistle blower Act, or the Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act
  • Deposition experience
  • Admission to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois
  • Experience with Illinois e-filing and federal CM/ECF
  • Experience at a small firm or with direct client contact

The Law Offices of Ruth I. Major, P.C. is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
