Roof Bolter Operator
Location: Excel Mining, LLC – Pikeville, Kentucky
Department: Underground Operations
Position Type: Hourly, Full-Time (Rotating Shifts)
Reports To: Section Foreman / Mine Superintendent
Excel Mining, LLC is currently seeking experienced and safety-minded Roof Bolter Operators to join our underground production teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for installing roof supports in compliance with the approved roof control plan and ensuring the safety and stability of all underground work areas.
This position operates on a rotating shift schedule — two (2) weeks on day shift followed by two (2) weeks on evening shift.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperate dual-head Fletcher RRII roof bolting machines to install permanent roof supports in accordance with the approved roof control plan.
Inspect the roof, ribs, and face areas before and during each cut to identify and correct hazardous conditions.
Set temporary supports and operate automated temporary roof supports (ATRS) as required.
Verify correct bolt lengths, resin usage, and torque per the approved plan and manufacturer specifications.
Work closely with section crews and foremen to maintain safe working conditions and proper ventilation in all areas.
Conduct pre-operational checks and basic maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation.
Follow all company, state, and federal safety standards and procedures (30 CFR and MSHA Part 75 compliance).
Uphold company policies regarding PPE, task training, and hazard recognition.
Required:
Current Kentucky Experienced Miner Certification.
Minimum 2 years of proven experience as a Roof Bolter Operator in an underground coal mine.
Demonstrated commitment to safety, compliance, and teamwork.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and random drug screen.
Strong understanding of roof control plans, bolting sequences, and safe mining practices.
Ability to lift objects over 40 pounds regularly, and stand, kneel, or work in confined areas for extended periods.
Preferred:
Additional certifications such as MET (Mine Emergency Technician).
Familiarity with Fletcher Roof Ranger II bolters or similar dual-head machines.
Underground coal mine environment subject to noise, vibration, dust, and variable conditions.
Requires standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
Rotating shift schedule: two weeks day shift / two weeks evening shift.
Overtime and weekend work may be required as needed for production or maintenance schedules.
