Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Poynter Institute, a global nonprofit with a mission to strengthen journalism and democracy through training journalists, fact-checking, media literacy and more, seeks a dynamic, creative Director of Marketing, skilled at the kind of brand storytelling the public can’t forget.

This marketing leader will help identify new audiences, shape new products and initiatives, and drive sustainable growth while ensuring Poynter’s mission reaches more people than ever before. The director will find innovative ways to build connections between Poynter and multiple audiences – journalists, philanthropic donors, media consumers, and corporate sponsors – to increase business opportunities and fundraising.

Our ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, passionate about our mission, familiar with the world of journalism and media, and experienced at raising the profile of and generating revenue for a nonprofit.

In this role you will:
  • Execute a cohesive, multi-channel marketing strategy to grow and promote Poynter, its brands and their work. That work includes professional development and ethics training, fact-checking, media literacy, publishing and convening.
  • Serve as a strategic adviser to senior leadership on marketing, audience growth, product development and positioning and pricing.
  • Work closely with our development team to support fundraising efforts with compelling messaging and effective multimedia marketing materials that generate donor support. Similarly, work closely with the sales and partnerships team to align sales, events and marketing strategies.
  • Create and execute a comprehensive public relations strategy that raises Poynter’s profile, both locally and nationally, through media appearances and positioning Poynter and its brands as trusted authorities on journalism and media issues.
  • Bring superior creativity to the role and make it a part of all marketing team efforts. Past experience with a creative agency is a plus.
  • Conduct and use competitive market research, data and analytics to inform our decision making.
  • Expand on a CRM strategy using Salesforce to automate customer journeys, improve retention, increase lifetime value and generate qualified leads.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success as a director or manager of marketing, with at least seven (7) years of experience in marketing strategy, branding, email and digital marketing, and events. Experience in marketing in a nonprofit environment is a plus.
  • Experience and excellence in leadership, people management, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical and creative thinker
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM in results-driven marketing campaigns.
  • Knowledgeable about current online marketing techniques and best practices, including Linked In advertising
  • Thorough knowledge of business analytics and ability to use analytics and make recommendations based on data.
  • Customer-oriented approach
  • Highly organized, comfortable with deadlines
  • Able to collaborate well with multiple stakeholders
  • Bachelor’s in marketing, business administration, communications, or relevant field or experience

Previous experience using a CRM in marketing campaigns is required. Familiarity with Salesforce is a plus.

Previous experience as a journalist, or in marketing for a journalism/news organization or journalism-adjacent organization is highly desirable. Experience working at a nonprofit or an educational institution is also desirable.

Preference will be given to local candidates who will be based out of our offices in St. Petersburg, Florida (we have a hybrid work policy of two days in office per week). However, we will consider fully remote applicants who are willing to travel regularly to our offices in Florida or Washington, D.C.

We will begin considering candidates as soon as applications are received.
