The Emergency Department Nurse Manager is accountable for delivering high-quality patient care in the Emergency Department. The nurse manager's goals are to ensure optimal patient and hospital outcomes, including quality of care, efficient resource utilization, and reimbursement for services.
JOB DUTIESAccountable for delivery of patient care in the Emergency Department.
Directs and delegates patient care assignments to nursing staff working in the unit.
Personnel Responsibilities- Recruitment and retention

- Competence assessment
Demonstrates fiscal accountability for the unit. Prepares departmental budget. Investigates and justifies variances.
Establishes and maintains communication between nursing units and ancillary departments.
Manages resource utilization to assure appropriate reimbursement for services
Establishes and maintains departmental objectives, policies and procedures, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Communicates these appropriately to staff.
Sets departmental goals, develops plans to achieve these goals, implements plan, monitors for effectiveness
Serves as role model for staff working on unit. Coaches, counsels, carries out disciplinary action as appropriate.
Investigates patient/family/medical staff concerns and communicates findings appropriately.
Collects, analyzes, and reports data for quality, compliance, resource utilization, and other areas as assigned.
Develops and maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
QUALIFICATIONSA.
Education:
Nursing degree, Bachelor's preferred; current registration with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation as a Registered Professional Nurse.
B. Training and
Experience:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in the Emergency Department. Leadership experience is desirable. BLS, ACLS, PALS & trauma-related certification required.
C. Qualities Desired:
Positive attitude. Leadership skills. Ability to work effectively in a self-directed role. Ability to multitask, capable of daily problem-solving and dealing effectively with complex issues. Excellent written and verbal skills. Basic computer skills are necessary.
