The Nurse Supervisor
- Public Health
is a registered nurse position providing professional support and leadership to the community in the area of Communicable Disease
. The Nurse Supervisor ensures communicable disease surveillance, investigation, reporting, and education operate effectively. This work allows disease control measures to be instituted to prevent outbreaks of new or re‑emerging diseases of public health significance. This position supervises a team of Public Health Nurses and educates healthcare providers on communicable diseases and acts as a consult to them.

Essential

Responsibilities include:

  • Investigation, tracking and reporting all North Carolina reportable diseases to the State Health Dept. as mandated under N.C. Public Health Law and in a timely manner input data into the NCEDSS (NC Electronic Disease Surveillance System).
  • Respond quickly and effectively to all outbreaks.
  • Complete active and passive surveillance, looking for disease trends in population or community, quickly identifying emerging new diseases and outbreaks.
  • Educate the public and private providers on communicable diseases, prevention, and other related issues.
  • Taking an active role and participating in communicable disease disaster preparedness exercises on county, state and federal levels.
  • Serve as a resource and consult within the agency, to local providers and to the community at large on communicable disease.
  • Institute isolation and quarantine orders as mandated under Public Health Law for disease specific outbreaks.
  • Complete home visits for surveillance, blood work for state lab and investigative purposes.

Wake County Public Health employees actively support and participate in county emergency preparedness and response activities, which may include temporary changes in responsibilities and working hours. Influenza immunization is a condition of initial and continued employment, subject to compliance with federal law.

Basics (Required

Education and Experience )
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Two years of experience as a nurse
  • North Carolina Board of Nursing Licensed Registered Nurse
  • CPR
  • AED
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred

Education and Experience )
  • Two years of nursing experience relevant to communicable disease
  • One year of experience as a Nurse Supervisor
