OverviewThe Master Plumber is responsible for performing tasks that are primarily plumbing and pipe fitting oriented, typical of maintenance and construction work within the healthcare facility.
Responsibilities- Inspects, installs, repairs, and maintains water, sewage, drainage, steam, condensate piping, gas, oil, and air piping assemblies and related fixtures.
- Inspects, repairs, installs, and maintains sewage systems, medical gas systems, valves, fixtures, traps, gauges, water systems, steam and condensate piping, gas, oil, and air piping, and other related items.
- Reads blueprints, schematics, and related drawings and specifications to determine proper layout and execution of tasks.
- Prepares detailed estimates of material quantities, supplies, and time required for tasks.
- Installs, repairs, maintains, and/or replaces valves, fittings, pipe, gauges, pumps, heaters, pressure vessels, and other related items.
- Performs tasks with hand or power tools in accordance with written or oral instructions.
- Selects and stocks tools and supplies for assigned tasks.
- Operates vehicle as required and maintains a system of supplies and tools on the vehicle.
- Carries out duties in accordance with state and local codes and inspections.
- Loads and unloads stock, tools, and supplies from vehicles.
- May instruct other personnel in job and tool safety, and plumbing and pipe fitting field.
- Stores stock, tools, and supplies in their assigned location.
- Maintains ongoing knowledge of applicable codes for hospitals and the plumbing field.
- Completes work orders, service requests, and project forms documenting time, materials used, and completion dates.
- Maintains a safe and orderly work area.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must have four (4) years of experience in the plumbing and pipe fitting field, which may be achieved through:
- A combination of one (1) year of technical school and three (3) years of field experience (each 100 hours of technical school over 1,300 may substitute for one‑half year work experience).
- Successful completion of a four‑year apprenticeship program.
- Job‑related experience totaling 4,000 hours.
- Technical school coursework should include at least 1,300 hours covering fundamentals of plumbing, National Plumbing Code, blueprint reading, specification preparation, human relations, mathematics, applied science, mechanical drawing, basic oxy‑acetylene cutting and welding, metal identification, designing and installing plumbing systems, designing and installing water, steam, and gas piping for heating and cooling systems, and use of hand and power tools. Cooperative education may substitute shop experience.
- Must possess a Master Plumber or Journeyman Plumber license to qualify for the job grade 14 pay rate.
