Maintenance Mechanic

Location: Briarwood

Westhab is the largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing and supportive services in Westchester County, NY.

We are designated as a 501(c)3, and since 1981, we have helped more than 5,000 homeless families and individuals move into their own apartments. We have developed nearly 700 units of quality, affordable housing representing a public and private investment of more than $60 million.

Each year more than 1,200 homeless or at-risk youth participate in our youth programs, hundreds of families in underserved neighborhoods get help in our community centers, 250 people find new jobs through our employment programs and 850 households call our properties home.

The Maintenance Mechanic performs all necessary interior and exterior facility repairs including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, window, and lock work of a 200 bed men’s homeless shelter. Keeps facility in working order using troubleshooting techniques and performing repairs as necessary. Fills in for Custodian/Driver in his/her absence and on designated shifts. Reports to the Lead Mechanic. Scheduled hours of work will vary based on the needs of the facility.

Weekend and evening hours are required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Escorts outside contractors, inspectors and other visitors and accepts deliveries as needed
• Responsible for all repairs in building and on grounds
• Troubleshoots and repairs includes light electrical and plumbing (outlets, switches, light fixtures, washers, seats and stems; drain lines; sinks; tubs; and toilets. Clears stoppages
• Performs HVAC troubleshooting and servicing including cleaning units/replacing filters
• Makes repairs to damaged sheetrock and plaster. Sands and paints as necessary
• Repairs/replaces windows, doors, locks and flooring; assembles/repairs/installs room furniture
• Repairs any client damage to rooms, furniture or room fixtures
• Responsible for all mechanical work on room turnovers and for work orders for occupied rooms
• Completes preventative maintenance checklists as directed by Supervisor
• May assist as needed with transfers or packing and storing of residents’ belongings
• In the absence of Custodian/Driver, performs all necessary custodial duties
• In the absence of Custodian/Driver, drives agency vehicles to transport clients and materials
• Performs other related duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED with English and Math skills required. Trade/Technical School training a plus. Two (2) years mechanical experience and experience with floor care equipment and procedures necessary. Valid NYS Driver license & clean record required.
