Sargent is looking for an experienced Shop Foreman to lead our Stillwater, ME maintenance shop. This is a hands‑on leadership role: you'll direct a team of mechanics, keep preventive maintenance and repairs moving across our truck and heavy equipment fleet, and make sure our crews in the field always have reliable, well‑maintained machines to work with. You'll turn a wrench yourself only when it counts – on the tough diagnostic calls or when the shop needs an extra set of experienced hands – but day to day, you're running the shop: setting priorities, training mechanics, and keeping parts, vendors, and repair records on track.

You'll report to the Equipment Superintendent – North and work closely with our Field Maintenance Foreman, Parts, and OEM/dealer service partners to keep downtime low and our fleet productive.

What You’ll Do
  • Assign and direct the daily work of shop mechanics based on repair priorities, project equipment needs, and each technician's skill set.
  • Set and manage the shop's preventive maintenance schedule to minimize unplanned equipment downtime across active projects.
  • Inspect completed repair work for quality, safety, and compliance before equipment goes back into service.
  • Train and mentor mechanics, building the shop’s bench strength and technical capability over time.
  • Weigh in on hiring and performance decisions for shop mechanics, alongside the Equipment Superintendent – North.
  • Coordinate with the Field Maintenance Foreman – North on jobs that cross between shop and field repair work.
  • Maintain detailed repair records, equipment service histories and downtime tracking, and report shop performance (turnaround time, backlog, cost) up the chain.
  • Coordinate parts and work orders with our Parts team to avoid repair delays.
  • Work directly with OEM and dealer service reps on warranty work, technical support, and major repairs beyond shop capability.
  • Enforce shop safety practices and OSHA/DOT compliance; keep the shop clean, organized, and safe.
  • Communicate shop capacity, equipment status, and repair timelines to the Equipment Superintendent – North to support regional planning and rental decisions.
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic, with hands‑on diagnostic and repair work on hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine systems.
  • 3+ years in a lead mechanic, foreman, or supervisory role.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to safely operate the equipment types serviced by the shop as needed for diagnosis and testing.
  • Comfort reading technical/service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
Nice to Have
  • OEM technical certifications (Caterpillar, Cummins, Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, etc.).
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
  • Experience specifically in heavy civil or highway construction equipment, rather than general fleet or on‑highway trucking.

Primarily shop-based, with regular exposure to noise, grease, fuel, and hydraulic fluids around heavy machinery. Requires lifting and carrying tools and parts (up to 50 lbs. regularly, more with mechanical or fellow employee‑owner assistance), working in varied positions for extended periods, and occasional outdoor/jobsite work in seasonal New England weather for field support calls.

About Sargent

Sargent has built infrastructure across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic since 1926, when founder Herbert

E. Sargent started with a single dump truck in Alton, Maine. Nearly a century later, that same hands‑on, get‑it‑done spirit drives a full‑service heavy civil contractor working on airports, highways, landfills, renewable energy sites, and municipal infrastructure from Maine to Virginia and North Carolina.

In 2013, Sargent became 100% employee‑owned.…
