Child Support Specialist I performs a wide variety of duties focused on maintaining a caseload, locating and interviewing custodial and non‑custodial parents and others to elicit factual information for establishing child support obligations, enforcing child support laws, arranging payments, and preparing cases for court hearings. Employees in this entry/trainee level receive in‑service training and are expected to be promoted to Child Support Specialist II after one year of satisfactory performance.
Responsibilities- Maintains and manages a general caseload of child support legal actions and enforcement activities.
- Coordinates appointments and conducts interviews with parents, employers, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
- Develops and analyzes information related to paternity and financial status of parties.
- Locates and evaluates assets, income, and liabilities of non‑custodial parents.
- Calculates and recommends child support payment obligations based on established guidelines.
- Explains child support laws, court orders, rules, regulations, and policies to the public and staff.
- Prepares, processes, and manages legal documents necessary for collection and enforcement.
- Documents and updates case information in the state‑wide automated system.
- Provides case status and resolves complaints, ensuring that the language used does not constitute legal advice.
- Applies federal, state, and local laws, procedures, and rules in case processing.
- Coordinates or conducts genetic tests when required.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Two (2) years of full‑time clerical experience involving interaction with the public, OR
- One year of full‑time debt‑collection experience involving interviewing, OR
- One year of full‑time experience as a Child Support Assistant I or Office Assistant II in a Child Support Services Department, OR
- Completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units of college.
Qualifications may be combined; fifteen (15) semester units or twenty‑two (22) quarter units equal six months of experience.
Training & EvaluationApplicants must receive a minimum rating of 70% on the Training & Experience Examination and the Education & Experience Examination, each weighted 100%.
