As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere.

• Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
• Remain alert and attentive during shifts
• Hear noises and distinguish distress signals effectively
• Teach with patience and a caring attitude
• Communicate verbally, projecting your voice across distances in normal and loud situations
• Remain in water for extended periods as required
• Manage scheduled classes/shifts and follow substitute procedures
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to class to set up and greet participants
• Clean equipment and pool deck after classes
• Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics Director

• Minimum age of 15
• Team player committed to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Values
• People-centered and service-oriented
• YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor experience preferred, but training available
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but training available
• Ability to swim and demonstrate strokes
• Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment

• Remain alert and attentive
• Work in wet/humid environments with chlorine exposure
• Remain in the pool for extended periods
• Hear noises and distinguish distress signals
• Scan the pool area continuously with clear vision
• Perform strenuous physical tasks for water rescues
• Communicate verbally, projecting voice as needed
• Work in indoor and outdoor pool conditions
• Lift up to 25 pounds
• Work in a high noise environment
