As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere.
Essential Responsibilities- Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
- Remain alert and attentive during shifts
- Hear noises and distinguish distress signals effectively
- Teach with patience and a caring attitude
- Communicate verbally, projecting your voice across distances in normal and loud situations
- Remain in water for extended periods as required
- Manage scheduled classes/shifts and follow substitute procedures
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to class to set up and greet participants
- Clean equipment and pool deck after classes
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics Director
- Minimum age of 15
- Team player committed to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Values
- People-centered and service-oriented
- YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor experience preferred, but training available
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but training available
- Ability to swim and demonstrate strokes
- Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of employment
- Remain alert and attentive
- Work in wet/humid environments with chlorine exposure
- Remain in the pool for extended periods
- Hear noises and distinguish distress signals
- Scan the pool area continuously with clear vision
- Perform strenuous physical tasks for water rescues
- Communicate verbally, projecting voice as needed
- Work in indoor and outdoor pool conditions
- Lift up to 25 pounds
- Work in a high noise environment
