Qualifications
  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
  • Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continues to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation.
  • Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements consistently and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Established the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff; designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings.
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Administrative Duties
  • Assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
  • Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times; coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
  • Serves as a mentor to each athlete, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Provides assistance, guidance and safeguards at all practices, games, and travel.
  • Provides training rules and unique sport regulations to each athlete.
  • Initiates programs concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies; completes paperwork on disabling injuries within 24 hours.
  • Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline, delineates due process procedures, and contracts parents for ineligible students.
  • Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Finance and Equipment
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director; establishes equipment requirements for next season, recommends gear specifications, and ensures operations stay within budget.
  • Accountable for all equipment; collects cost of lost or unreturned items; arranges issuance, storage, reconditioning, and inventory reporting.
  • Marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices; authorizes entry and requisition.
  • Ensures athletes stay in authorized areas of the building.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games; maintains cleanliness and equipment condition.
  • Secures doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving.
  • Instills respect for equipment and property.
Public Relations
  • Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promotes the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other sports and outside via media, little league programs, etc.
  • Responsible for quality and validity of any oral or written release to local media; maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  • Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments and results.
