A Directional Drill operator possesses the required knowledge, skill, and physical ability to perform construction and maintenance work in horizontal directional drilling, underground utilities, and gas service lines, while also working with daily contracts with the public. Performs duties as directed by foreman while operating all types of Directional Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch).
Essential Functions- Operate HDD Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch) to drill and install underground gas lines.
- Place, remove or maintain underground utilities as directed. Including carrying pipe, bags, other heavy items, jack hammering, shoveling, tamping, and installing pipe, duct or cable.
- Participate in manual labor tasks as required on project.
- Secure work sites, equipment, and materials at the end of each shift to ensure public safety and safety of equipment and materials. Ensure that all work is in compliance with the company’s safety protocols.
- Understand when to wear personal protective equipment.
- Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Foreman or Supervisor.
- Execute job deliverables according to customer specifications and contract requirements.
- Ensure all project work is compliant with installation standards and is performed safely and correctly.
- Promote and monitor the safety of team members.
- Prepare sites to ensure maximum optimization of construction work procedures.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Attention to detail to ensure all repairs, inspections, and calibrations are performed to industry standards and fully documented.
- Exhibits ability to think practically and creatively to implement the best safety practices.
- Responds quickly and efficiently to emergency situations while remaining calm in a crisis.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
- Three to five years of experience operating HDD equipment in underground utility or pipeline construction.
- Previous experience in the natural gas industry is highly preferred.
- Certifications in HDD Operation, safety training, and utility locating highly desirable.
