Summary of ResponsibilitiesThe Department of History and Regional Studies seeks a graduate assistant who is willing to work hard to help teach and administer lower-division courses as well as promote the department to prospective students. The graduate assistant will gain experience as a college‑level instructor by leading in‑class discussions, giving lectures, and grading. They will help the department chair articulate and market the benefits of majoring in History at Schreiner University.
Finally, they will help the department facilitate undergraduate research among History majors.
- Grade course assignments (attendance, short essays, exams) for two (2) lower‑division History courses per semester
- Attend at least half of the class meetings for two face‑to‑face lower‑division History courses per semester
- Lead three (3) class discussions in two face‑to‑face lower‑division History course, for a total of six (6) class discussion leads
- Deliver two (2) lectures per semester in two face‑to‑face lower‑division History course, for a total of four (4) lectures
- Maintain the database of History majors
- Assist students in History courses with content‑related questions and writing development
- Promote undergraduate research in History in various ways:
- Encourage History majors to present their work at Schreiner's annual Academic Showcase
- Find and distribute information to History majors about undergraduate research conferences in the region
- Assist the department chair in the founding of an undergraduate presentation conference at Schreiner University, prospectively called the Hill Country History Conference, "HC²"
- Help History graduates find and pursue publication venues for their senior theses
- Promote the department in various ways:
- Maintain the department's table/booth at SU Saturdays, passing out promotional materials and engaging interested students and their parents in the major
- Assist department faculty when they deliver mock classes as SU Saturdays: passing out flyers, keeping attendance, recording contact information of those in attendance
- Develop a database of prospective students
- Develop and maintain an alumni network of History graduates
- Maintain and update the department website
- Assist the department chair to develop a promotional video for the department
- Promote the department through social media (e.g. Instagram)
- Work alongside the department chair to brainstorm promotional ideas, such as virtually promoting the major to high schools and community colleges
- Education:
Bachelor's degree, preferably in the Humanities - Personable, conversational, with a willingness to talk to prospective students and their parents
- A willingness and ease with working with undergraduate students
- Some ability to formulate and deliver lesson plans
- Some ability to lead class discussions
- Adequate computer skills
- Adeptness with the use of Microsoft products:
Word, Excel, Power Point - Familiarity with online learning platforms, e.g. Canvas
- Familiarity with the use of social media platforms, e.g. Instagram
