This position is a senior-level Custodian III at Kerrville State Hospital, responsible for maintaining cleanliness, safety, and infection control throughout state hospital buildings and treatment units.
Responsibilities- Perform, coordinate, clean, and sanitize state hospital buildings and treatment units.
- Provide housekeeping services in a clinical setting, including inspections of buildings and equipment.
- Order and restock supplies and equipment; provide backup to other custodians as needed.
- Work independently with limited supervision, exercising initiative and judgment.
- Participate in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required.
- Work additional shifts and locations as necessary for security or emergency duties.
- Attend work regularly and follow a specific shift schedule, including rotating, extended, or overtime shifts.
- Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, equipment, and records; perform minor repairs on equipment.
- Clean, dust, and disinfect restrooms, office surfaces, treatment areas, patient bedrooms, and other hospital areas.
- Collect and dispose of all waste/trash on a regular basis.
- Ensure patient units meet or exceed minimum standards for cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control.
- Inspect buildings for problem areas, identify issues, and ensure follow‑up actions are completed.
- Assist the Custodian Manager in implementing the overall hospital safety and infection control program.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures (dust, sweep, mop, strip, wax floors, clean and disinfect restrooms).
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in using custodial materials, chemicals, and equipment.
- Skills in maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work promptly.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co‑workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours and adapt to changing shift patterns.
- One year of custodial/housekeeping experience in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar setting.
- Alternatively, eighteen (18) months proven work experience.
- No required registrations, licensure, or certifications.
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks, including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males aged 18‑25 must be registered with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age;
Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required, and employees must be vaccinated according to the level of contact with individuals. Employees who are not vaccinated for influenza may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
