HSCS comprises nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state-supported living centers.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on a regular basis and may be requested to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
  • Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally or by injection; assist other medical staff in examining and caring for patients.
  • Make rounds and/or home visits as needed and work in other locations at the SH as required.
  • Demonstrate competency in performing technical nursing tasks and procedures in accordance with HHSC, SH, and state regulations.
  • Assist in acclimating and orienting new LVN staff to perform nursing functions at the SH, including introducing them to the individuals and describing their needs and preferences.
  • Preform basic and routine nursing tasks according to facility and state regulations; under guidance, build skills necessary to perform more technical procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, and breathing treatments.
  • Monitor individuals’ weight, diet, mealtimes, and vital signs; monitor health status after treatments and procedures.
  • Instruct direct support professionals on how to monitor individuals after a treatment or procedure using instruction sheets.
  • Document and report pertinent treatments and observations accurately in the individual’s medical record.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and integration by communicating pertinent information orally and in writing to other team members.
  • Respond to emergency situations; follow safety and infection control procedures of the SH.
  • Collect specimens for laboratory examination and conduct appropriate screening tests when requested by lab personnel.
  • Provide information and education to individuals, explaining name, purpose, and reasons for medications or procedures.
  • Ensure correct positioning before providing treatment and assist or instruct other staff in turning/repositioning individuals.
  • Ensure supplies are available by taking inventory, stocking the unit, and ordering supplies through appropriate channels.
  • Participate in agency obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require an alternate shift pattern assignment or location.

Skills And Abilities

(KSAs)
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, techniques, and principles for patient care.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment such as CPR and TIPS; ability to assess and care for patients in emergency situations.
  • Skill in using reasoning to identify problems and consider appropriate resolutions.
  • Skill in operating computers and applicable software.
  • Skill in caring for and treating patients.
  • Ability to provide care to a wide variety of individuals with complex medical, mental health, and/or behavioral health issues.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and use an electronic health record system once trained.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and instruct others.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification and possess strength and flexibility to safely perform CPR.
