What You Will Be Doing

As a 3rd Assistant Engineer you will oversee the safe and efficient operation of engineering machinery, equipment and spaces, logging all relevant data. Your responsibilities include conducting routine maintenance and repairs on engine‑room machinery and auxiliary equipment, supervising repairs performed by the ship crew, technicians contracted in shipyards or shore‑side facilities, and actively participating as a leader in lifeboat and emergency response teams.

You will ensure professional watch discipline and execute duties effectively while reporting to the First Assistant Engineer and undertaking any other assigned duties to contribute to the overall success of the team.

Working Environment

AMHS operates in a fast‑paced, dynamic work environment with a diverse workforce. Room and board are provided while on assignment; crew stays in shared or single quarters depending on the vessel, and meals are provided in the crew and/or officers’ mess. AMHS is a drug‑and‑alcohol‑free workplace with a strictly enforced policy. All employees onboard, including new hires receiving housing assistance, are subject to all DOT&PF and AMHS policies.

Zero tolerance for drug and alcohol violations.

Schedule & Assignments
  • Variable 2‑Weeks‑On/2‑Weeks‑Off rotation with possible split shifts.
  • Daily shifts range from 8 to 12 hours depending on route/vessel.
  • Work assignments are scheduled by Dispatch in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Seniority plays a major role in assignment.
Routes & Change Ports
  • SE route serves communities between Bellingham, WA and Skagway, AK (majority of vessels).
  • SW route serves communities between Cordova and the Aleutian Chain.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) issued Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) endorsed with the following:
    • STCW Endorsements:
      • Basic (Safety) Training (VI/1)
      • Proficiency in the Use of Survival Craft (VI/2)
      • Officer in Charge of a Watch (III/1) (waiver‑able based on need)
      • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VI/6)
    • National Endorsements:
      • Third Assistant Engineer Motor Propelled Vessels (any HP)
      • Lifeboat Operator
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) (color copy)
  • Current DOT Drug Test (within the last 6 months)
  • Current USCG Medical Certificate (STCW 2‑yr date)
  • Valid Driver’s License
