Maternity Ward Manager

The expectations within this job description will be met through professional leadership, clinical management, hands‑on clinical practice, education and training, and research. The post holder will ensure that high quality midwifery care is delivered within their designated clinical area, set the standards of clinical practice with the multidisciplinary team, and monitor patient outcomes. The post holder will also have responsibility for the operational effectiveness of their designated clinical area, liaising with senior colleagues to ensure a safe, high‑quality service is provided across the maternity service.
They will take on‑site responsibility for the operational effectiveness of the maternity service “out of hours”, in liaison with the lead midwives and on‑call manager. The post holder must have access to a car/transport and be able to travel between locations.
Management
- Apply the Maple Ward staff roles and responsibilities to their practice.
- Assist the senior midwifery management team to manage the 24‑hour midwifery service.
- Manage the Maple Ward, ensuring appropriate delegation of staff to care for clients.
- Keep the senior midwifery management team and matron on call informed of significant changes in the day‑to‑day situation within the sphere of control and report on appropriate matters.
- Ensure appropriate referral to other professional/agencies as needed.
- Ensure that relevant guidelines and policies are effectively and efficiently implemented.
- Ensure the maximum use of all resources available within the sphere of control.
- Work with the practice development team to ensure an optimum environment for all learners, including newly qualified midwives, student midwives, nurses, medical students, return‑to‑practice and adaptation midwives.
- Ensure that all staff within the sphere of control fulfil the function of the post.
- Registered Midwife
- Degree in higher education or equivalent
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Management Training or Equivalent
- Masters or equivalent experience
- Experience in facilitating live drills
- Broad range of midwifery experience promoting normal birth
- Extensive experience in the acute healthcare setting in clinical leadership/clinical management position
- Evidence of advanced leadership qualities
- Must be flexible and adaptable
- Ability to work as a member of a team as well as the wider multidisciplinary team
- Able to work within a system that provides a 24‑hour, 7 days a week service
- Leadership skills and effective communication skills, both verbal and written
