Job OverviewIncumbent provides specialized developmental care and instruction for children and youth aged 6 weeks to 18 years in one or more CY programs. The role includes guidance, assistance, and mentoring for CY Program Assistants. Works under the direction of the supervisor or another qualified higher graded employee.
Responsibilities- Mentor: Mentors assigned CY Program Assistant team, works with senior employees to provide instruction and training to lower-level employees, assists in completing Standardized Module Training, mentors for professional development, models appropriate behaviors, provides suggestions and recommendations, assists in recording observations, and consults with the T&C Specialist.
- Curriculum: Plans activities for program participants, reviews activities for appropriateness, works with the T&C Specialist to implement activities and special events, incorporates special instructions from parents, prepares and implements program options for children and youth with special requirements, assists with special projects, homework and life skills, recommends changes to activities and plans, sets up displays and bulletin boards, arranges for snacks or meals.
- Indoor and Outdoor Environment: Prepares, arranges, and maintains activity areas and materials, suggests improvements, inventories equipment, secures supplies, equipment, and facilities.
- Interactions and Relationships: Encourages participant interest and promotes positive interactions; interacts with children and youth using approved guidance and development techniques.
- Supervision of Children and Youth: Provides care and supervision, maintains control of whereabouts and safety, ensures proper departure, supervises during schedule and special events.
- Parent and Employee Communication: Interacts professionally with employees, parents, and local command personnel; participates in conferences and briefs.
- Assessment: Observes children and youth, documents developmental progression, assists assistants with assessment tasks.
- Compliance: Ensures compliance with DoD certification, accreditation, laws, policies, and regulations.
- Additional Responsibilities: Collects, maintains, and reports program participation data; performs other duties as assigned; provides a complete list of duties at hire.
- Test Designated Position (TDP) requiring pre‑employment and random drug testing.
- Must complete all background checks, including fingerprint, Tier 1 Child Care check, and SCHR check.
- Must pass E‑Verify employment verification.
- Must pass a pre‑employment physical, provide immunization evidence, and be free of communicable diseases.
- Must obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance as needed.
- Must complete required training certificates and maintain required credentials.
- Participation in Direct Deposit/EFT within first 30 days is required.
- Social Security Card required.
- Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
- Probationary period may apply.
- From May 7, 2025, non‑affiliated individuals need a REAL‑‑compliant driver's license or acceptable installation access.
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate programs for children and youth 6 weeks–18 years.
- Knowledge of child and youth development principles, practices, and techniques.
- Skills to apply federal and state laws related to child abuse prevention.
- Skills in understanding interests and motivations in a CYP environment.
- Skills in program planning, organizing, and employee scheduling.
- Skills to provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to CY Program Assistants.
- Ability to identify and respond to emergency situations.
- Ability to train employees on child healthcare, abuse recognition, etc.
- Ability to develop curriculum outlines and lesson plans.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication in English.
- One (1) year of experience at the CY‑02 (GSE‑04) level or equivalent.
