Detention Deputy Trainee
Base pay range: $12.22/hr – $12.22/hr (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)
Shift: 12.22 hours w/o Holidays
Job OverviewThis position involves working directly with inmates detained in the Monroe County Detention Facility. Members may be assigned to dorms, medical, transportation, main control, intake and release, classification and laundry. Officers are responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates. The work requires split‑second decision making and may involve unusual, high‑stress situations. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Detention Sergeant who reviews performance through conferences, reports, inspections, and observation.
Responsibilities- 85% Care, custody, and control of inmates.
- 8% Monitor inmate work details.
- 5% Supervise issuance of food to inmates.
- 1% Supervise issuance of medicine to inmates.
- 1% Supervise issuance of canteen items.
- Process incoming prisoners: search, collect property, take fingerprints and photos, prepare records, and make entries in log books.
- Conduct security inspections to check safety and well‑being of all inmates; report unusual conditions or incidents.
- Maintain order in all cell blocks and distribute food and medication trays.
- Sort and distribute mail; issue toilet articles and sanitary supplies, prepare canteen orders.
- Collect and distribute laundry; oversee inmates on special work details and recreational activities.
- Transport inmates to court and escort them to activities such as visitors or medical appointments.
- Conduct bed checks and count inmates; search inmates and cells for contraband.
- Complete paperwork (activity forms, log book, medications, feed list) and enter data into the computer.
- Return personal property to discharged inmates and complete discharge paperwork.
- Participate in Basic Corrections Academy: defensive tactics, firearm training, and physical fitness drills.
- Perform related work as required.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification as a Detention Deputy in compliance with Florida requirements.
- Experience with security or corrections work is desirable.
Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of policies, rules, regulations, and procedures governing jail security and inmate welfare.
- Knowledge of human behavior as it applies to confinement.
- Knowledge of hygiene, first aid, CPR, firefighting procedures, and self‑defense techniques.
- Knowledge of the legal rights of incarcerated persons.
- Skill in the use of restraining devices and self‑defense.
- Ability to oversee recreational and work activities; detect and respond to emergencies quickly.
- Effective communication with inmates; prepare reports and maintain records.
- Valid Florida driver’s license.
- Availability to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Certification as a Detention Deputy in compliance with Florida requirements.
- Ability to work during natural disasters or unforeseen emergencies.
- Handling inmates during unfavorable and life‑threatening situations.
- Utilizing verbal commands when giving orders.
- Light (up to 20 lbs) to heavy (150 lbs and over) lifting and carrying.
- Reaching, pulling, pushing, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, bending, and running.
- Exposure to blood and viral pathogens.
- Biohazard waste.
- Exposure to crabs, lice, maggots, or open sores.
- Exposure to communicable diseases.
- Exposure to various levels of noise.
- Exposure to unpleasant odors and fumes.
- Hazardous and stressful conditions and/or situations.
