In tandem with a seasoned WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer, after receiving their Commercial Driving Permit, the Driver Apprentice will complete the required training to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle providing service to customers in their respective Line of Business (LOB). The Driver Apprentice will continue in this role until they complete all training requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate vehicle in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA, DOT and all local, state and federal laws.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and document checks using the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
- Immediately report unsafe situations or service-related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
- Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required.
- Work with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
- Notify Operations Manager of incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
- Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager; complete end-of-day documentation and checkout.
- Assist with all duties as scheduled to meet customer needs.
- On route, work as an on-route Helper while obtaining the Commercial Driving Permit and completing training to be a WM Driver:
- Load and unload residential and/or commercial containers; operate hoisting device to lift and empty bins into truck hopper.
- Assist driver with backing maneuvers; notify on incidents, service interruptions, or safety hazards.
- Maintain cleanliness at customer sites and follow safety procedures.
This job has no supervisory duties.
Qualifications- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Ability to perform physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Successfully complete and pass pre-employment drug screen.
- Current state-issued standard Driver’s License.

Experience:
No previous experience required.
- Must be able to use motor coordination with finger dexterity most of the workday.
- Physical effort may involve handling objects; environment may include dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes.
- Normal setting for this job is outdoors and/or driving a vehicle.
