Join the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education to teach special education in a grade‑6‑8 classroom.
Minimum Qualifications- Valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.
- Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit.
- Valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.
- Special education classroom experience in a K‑12 school setting.
- Plan and facilitate Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
- Exercise independent and professional judgment in carrying out daily functions.
- Maintain an effective work pace under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively.
- Work effectively with others.

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of each month.
Benefits- Compensation: 10‑month teachers shall be compensated for the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule for working a 10‑month work year.
- Paid sick leave: 10‑month teachers receive 18 days of paid sick leave (of which 6 can be utilized for personal and/or professional development purposes).
- Health Insurance:
The State pays a portion of the premiums for State‑sponsored Medical, Drug, Vision, and Adult Dental plans. - Group Life Insurance:
The State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees. - Premium Conversion Plan:
Employees may increase take‑home pay by having the State deduct health‑care premiums before payroll taxes. - Flexible Spending Accounts:
Eligible employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and social‑security taxes. - Retirement Plan:
The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Employees with at least 10 years of credited service and who have reached 62 years of age, or have 30 years of credited service and are 55 years old, may retire and receive benefits. - Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA):
Eligible employees may participate in a tax‑shelter annuity program. - Deferred Compensation:
The State offers employees a tax‑deferred retirement investment program with several investment options. - Temporary Disability Insurance:
Qualified employees may receive benefits for a disability caused by a non‑work‑related injury or illness. - Social Security:
The State contributes to an employee’s social‑security account. - Workers’ Compensation:
Benefits for medical expenses and partial wage support for workplace injury. - Union & Collective Bargaining:
Employees have the right to join the union for collective bargaining with the State and employee representation.
