Communities for Afghans Sponsor Group Volunteer

Help an Afghan Family Build a New Life in the UK

As part of the Government-led Communities for Afghans programme, we are looking for individuals or groups to form a team of six volunteers to support an Afghan family as they settle into life in the UK.

Whether you're friends, neighbours, colleagues, members of a faith group, veterans, or part of a community organisation, you can make a real difference by helping a family feel welcomed, supported, and connected.

UK-based volunteers only.

About the Programme

The Communities for Afghans programme is a Government-approved, community-led initiative that supports Afghan refugee families as they rebuild their lives in the UK.

Volunteers play a vital role in helping families settle into their new communities, gain confidence, and develop a genuine sense of belonging.

We are currently focused on supporting families across:

  • Wales
  • West Midlands
  • Scotland

However, we are also keen to support families elsewhere where possible, and volunteers can work together remotely in some circumstances.

What Volunteers Do

As part of a Sponsor Group, you will help:

  • Find suitable housing for a family
  • Welcome them into their new community
  • Provide practical support with everyday life
  • Offer encouragement and emotional support
  • Help families access local services and opportunities
  • Support integration and community connections

You will be supported throughout by the programme team.

Who Can Get Involved?

We welcome:

  • Friends and neighbours
  • Colleagues and workplace teams
  • Faith groups
  • Veterans
  • Community organisations
  • Individuals willing to join a volunteer team

No specialist experience is required — enthusiasm, compassion, and a commitment to helping others are what matter most.

Why Volunteer?

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Make a lasting difference to a family's future
  • Help people rebuild their lives after displacement
  • Strengthen community connections
  • Work alongside like-minded volunteers
  • Be part of a rewarding national initiative

If you'd like to help an Afghan family settle into their new community and create a welcoming place they can call home, we'd love to hear from you. Together, we can help families rebuild their lives and look forward to a brighter future.
