Nurse Practitioner​/Physician Assistant - King of Prussia NICU

A Brief Overview

The Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) at Middleman Family Pavilion Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at King of Prussia is a Level III unit with significant growth planned. It provides care for neonates who need acute medical care, serving as a higher‑level of care for community NICUs and as an option for CHOP patients who do not require ECMO or immediate surgical intervention.

The medical staff consists of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants led by senior neonatologists and provides care for up to 29 babies. There is also a Nocturnist role at a higher salary.

• Assesses the complex acute, critical and chronically ill patient for urgent and emergent conditions, using relevant data to evaluate for physiologic instability and formulating a plan of care.
• Performs therapeutic interventions to stabilize acute and critical health problems, as outlined in the Scope of Practice Document and approved through credentialing/privileging.
• Analyzes the indications, contraindications, risk of complications and cost‑benefits of therapeutic interventions.
• Manages the plan of care through evaluation, modification and documentation according to the patient’s response to therapy, focusing on optimizing outcomes.
• Incorporates health promotion, protection and injury prevention measures into the plan of care within the context of complex illness.
• Facilitates the patient’s transitions between and within health‑care settings.
• Serves as an educational resource to the patient/family, nursing staff and provider team; acts as a consultant to the multidisciplinary team.
• Participates in scholarly activities, including research and education, and maintains required competencies while seeking appropriate educational offerings. Mentors nurses, nurse practitioners, students and other health‑care providers.
• Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues, changing practice to enhance safety, sharing errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms and demonstrating shared accountability for safe practice.
