Queen’s is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Engineer to perform a critical role in advancing the stewardship of its physical infrastructure. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a modern facilities environment by ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electrical infrastructure powering one of Canada’s premier universities.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Engineering, the Electrical Engineer provides the university with electrical engineering expertise to ensure that existing and new university electrical infrastructure and building systems are safe, code compliant, reliable, and efficient in their design, construction, maintenance and operation.
The Electrical Engineer provides engineering leadership by contributing to annual and long-term planning, policy development, financial planning, and resource allocation. This is a key technical role that interfaces with Facilities staff, campus faculties/departments, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
In consultation with the Assistant Director and Senior Electrical Engineer, the Electrical Engineer also provides leadership through mentoring junior members of the Engineering Team and Interns.
The Electrical Engineer must be available to respond to emergency calls outside of normal working hours.
Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Ensure the electrical engineering sections of the University’s Design Standards and Construction Guidelines are current, relevant, continuously improved, and consistently applied.
Ensure electrical engineering is appropriately represented at all stages of major construction projects, including kick-off, design review, construction, commissioning, and handover.
Review electrical engineering designs prepared by others for equipment installed in university buildings.
Provide technical expertise through written and verbal guidance to support operations and maintenance staff.
Design Electrical Engineered systems for new projects, renovations, and maintenance problems.
Using a safety-first approach, provide electrical technical expertise and instruction to maintenance, central heating plant, design and construction unit project management, and university contractors’ staff.
Participate in the creation, maintenance, and prioritization of the University’s deferred maintenance lists.
Establish requirements for electrical engineering solutions for new projects, renovations, and maintenance issues.
Participate in the development and ongoing review of the Queen’s Facilities strategic plan, contributing to long-term and annual performance targets.
Plan, prioritize and manage the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance and coaching. Identify the need for staff resources, participate on staffing committees, and make effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
Manage performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing and evaluating performance and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
Assess staff training and development needs and ensure that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
Investigate, address and resolve employee/labour relations issues, including disciplinary matters. Make decisions or effective recommendations on matters involving possible discipline, discharge and probationary termination.
SPECIAL SKILLS Diagnose and resolve equipment operating problems efficiently using sound technical judgment, even with incomplete information.
Resolve conflicts effectively through negotiation and influence.
Communicate clearly and effectively with individuals across a wide range of roles, experience levels, and responsibilities within and outside the university community.
Think strategically and contribute to and communicate long-term priorities within Facilities.
Mentor Interns/junior members of the electrical engineering team.
