Responsibilities& Qualifications
The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Leader develops and facilitates the implementation and coordination of policies, procedures and programs to protect our team members and promote the highest standards of EHS within Novelis Kingston.
The successful EHS Leader will maintain an active presence on the shop floor to foster strong relationships within the plant. This team member will work strategically outside of EHS to collaborate with other functions such as:
Operations/Production, Maintenance, Quality, Reliability, Engineering, Human Resources, Procurement, and Legal.

- Be accountable for the site's Environmental, Health and Safety performance, including development and execution of annual EHS objectives, improvement plans, compliance activities, and associated budgets.
- Own the EHS operating budget and capital planning process, ensuring resources are effectively allocated to achieve compliance requirements, risk reduction initiatives, strategic objectives, and continuous improvement activities.
- Partner with site leadership to identify, prioritize, and execute EHS investments, balancing regulatory requirements, business needs, and employee safety.
- Work closely with Site Leadership and team to ensure consistent application of EHS related policies and practices. Communicate incidents or policy changes.
- Lead compliance within our EHS Management System, in addition to regulatory, and Novelis requirements by participating in, and supporting, audits.
- Be present on the shop floor daily, engaging in conversation, collecting feedback, and actively seeking to understand team member perspectives.
- Act as a resource and mentor to all partners at the plant.
- Implement Novelis EHS strategy and other strategic objectives, as directed by head office or by local plant initiatives.
- Prioritize and balance multiple and simultaneous activities to meet demands of the job within allocated time frames.
- Promote a collaborative EHS culture, acquiring cooperation and involvement from Leaders and team members who have concerns and/or ideas for change.
- Participate in continuous improvement exercises, using the experiences and knowledge of others to build sustainable solutions.
- Work with the Education & Training Pillar to develop EHS training matrix and facilitate training programs.

- In general, the position acts as an EHS champion, strategic partner and internal consultant.
- Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Safety Engineering, Environmental Science or related field
- Previous leadership experience in an EHS position in a collaborative, industrial, setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), associated regulations, and industry best practices, with the ability to ensure compliance and drive continuous improvement in workplace safety.
- Previous Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) training (Certification Part I and/or Part II) and experience serving as a JHSC member.
- Extensive knowledge and skill in development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs/activities and procedures.
- Experience with EHS Management Systems (ISO 14001 and OHSAS 45001) and EHS auditing.
