Title: Nurse Practitioner – Medical Oncology

PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Extended Class with additional educational preparation and experience, who possesses and demonstrates the competencies to autonomously diagnose order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform specific procedures within their legislated scope of practice.
The NP must know and practice in accordance with the standards relevant to the practice area as well as the legislation and regulations applicable to an NP practice:
- Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991;
- Nursing Act, 1991;
- Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act;
- Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act, 1990;
- Public Hospitals Act, 1990;
- Health Protection and Promotion Act, 1990.
Reporting to the Program Operational Director, the NP works in an extended nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in order to formulate clinical decisions, appropriately manage acute illness and promote wellness within their area of specialty.
The NP explicitly consults the inter-professional team where care is required outside of the NP scope of practice and/or not covered by a Medical Directive.
Within this role, the NP is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy and must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient-and-family-centered care and engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE :
Clinical Domain :
The NP will provide direct, comprehensive clinical care to patients. The provision of clinical care to patients and their families constitutes an essential component of the NP role. The NP works autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and, where required, under a defined collaborative practice agreement, to provide care to a defined population.
The NP will collaborate with the interprofessional team to support the care of the patient and family.
Research :
The NP will ensure that patient care and nursing practice innovations within the Program are supported by research, and are reflective of, and congruent with, evidence based or current best practice guidelines/standards of practice. The NP will participate in and utilize research which improves patient outcomes, contributes to the expansion of nursing knowledge and advances the profession of nursing. The NP will participate in the evaluation of current practices at the individual and systems levels identifying gaps in practice and areas for future research to enhance the standard of care and nursing practice.
Education :
Acts as a resource, coach and mentor to the interprofessional team, particularly related to area of expertise and complex patient/client and family situations.
Acts as a resource and preceptor to students.
Identifies learning needs and uses adult education concepts in planning, designing and implementing educational strategies.
Provides consultation for patients and families and our community partners.
Works in affiliation with Queens University and other academic partners to meet training and professional development requirements.
Leadership :
The NP will identify risk related to clinical practice which is managed through observation, assessment, and discussion with the involved practitioners. NPs improve clinical practice through the development, implementation and evaluation of practice guidelines, standards, policies and procedures that promote excellence in nursing practice in collaboration with key stakeholders. The NP participates in clinical and organizational committees.
