About the Role

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is seeking an experienced and passionate NP to join our Children’s Outpatient Clinic . This role offers the opportunity to practice at the full scope of advanced nursing within a collaborative, academic, and patient-and-family-centered care environment.

As a Nurse Practitioner, you will work autonomously and in partnership with an interprofessional team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to a defined pediatric population. This role blends clinical excellence, leadership, education, and research , supporting KHSC’s mission of advancing care, discovery, and learning.

Primary Function

The Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class who applies advanced clinical expertise to autonomously:

  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Prescribe medications and perform procedures within legislated scope
  • Promote health, wellness, and patient self-management

The NP practices in alignment with professional standards and applicable provincial legislation, including but not limited to:

  • Regulated Health Professions Act
  • Nursing Act
  • Public Hospitals Act
  • Health Protection and Promotion Act

Reporting to the Program Operational Director , the NP practices with a high degree of independence, consulting with physicians and the interprofessional team when care is outside the NP scope of practice or medical directives.

Key Responsibilities Clinical Practice
  • Provide comprehensive, patient- and family-centered clinical care to pediatric outpatients
  • Independently assess, diagnose, treat, and manage care within the NP scope of practice
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to ensure coordinated, high-quality care
  • Manage complex clinical situations requiring advanced judgment and decision-making
Research & Evidence-Based Practice
  • Integrate current research and best practice guidelines into clinical care
  • Participate in research activities and quality improvement initiatives
  • Evaluate clinical practices to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement
  • Support innovation that improves patient outcomes and advances nursing practice
Education
  • Serve as a clinical expert, coach, and mentor to staff and learners
  • Act as a preceptor for nursing and NP students
  • Identify learning needs and design educational strategies using adult learning principles
  • Provide education and consultation to patients, families, and community partners
  • Collaborate with Queen’s University and other academic institutions
Leadership
  • Provide professional and clinical leadership within the program and organization
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of policies, guidelines, and standards
  • Participate in clinical and organizational committees
  • Promote evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement
  • Advocate for patients, families, and communities within the health system
Qualifications & Skills

Required:

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN (Extended Class) – Adult, Pediatric, Neonatal, or Primary Health Care
  • Master of Science in Nursing or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience in a related clinical area
  • Membership in a professional organization (e.g., CNA, RNAO, NPAO)
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and interprofessional collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation abilities
  • Proven ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time‑management skills
  • Experience in education, conflict resolution, and change leadership
  • Knowledge of research methods, data analysis, and computer applications

Assets:

  • CNA Specialty Certification in area of practice
