The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Extended Class with additional educational preparation and experience, who possesses and demonstrates the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform specific procedures within their legislated scope of practice.
The NP must practice in accordance with the standards relevant to the practice area and the legislation and regulations applicable to NP practice, including the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991;
Nursing Act, 1991;
Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act;
Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act, 1990;
Public Hospitals Act, 1990;
Health Protection and Promotion Act, 1990.
Reporting to the Program Operational Director, the NP works in an extended nursing role with autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions, manage acute illness, and promote wellness within their area of specialty. The NP consults the inter-professional team when care falls outside the NP scope of practice or is not covered by a Medical Directive. The NP contributes to the KHSC strategy and promotes patient- and family-centered care and engagement.
Responsibilities& Duties
Clinical Domain:
- Provide direct, comprehensive clinical care to patients and families; diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and defined collaborative practice agreement where required.
- Collaborate with the interprofessional team to support patient and family care; practice autonomously within defined parameters.
Research:
- Ensure patient care and nursing practice innovations are supported by research and aligned with evidence-based or current best practice guidelines.
- Participate in and utilize research to improve patient outcomes, expand nursing knowledge, and advance the profession; evaluate current practices to identify gaps and areas for future research.
Education:
- Act as a resource, coach and mentor to the interprofessional team; provide preceptorship to students; identify learning needs and apply adult education concepts to planning and implementing educational strategies.
- Provide consultation for patients, families and community partners; collaborate with Queens University and other academic partners for training and professional development.
Leadership:
- Identify clinical practice risks and develop, implement, and evaluate practice guidelines, standards, policies and procedures; participate in clinical and organizational committees.
- Support and promote evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement; serve as a resource to individuals and groups within the program and organization, and provide leadership and consultancy to nursing colleagues and interprofessional team members.
- Advocate for individuals, families, groups and communities regarding treatment, healthcare system, and policy decisions affecting health and quality of life.
- Identify learning needs of nurses and interprofessional team members and address them within available resources.
The proportion of time spent in the various domains of practice will be identified by the program and the population served.

- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as Registered Nurses in the Extended Class with one of the following specialty classes:
Adult, Pediatric, Neonatal, or Primary Health Care. - De Souza Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification preferred – required within 6 months of hire.
- Masters of Science (Nursing) or a Masters in a relevant discipline.
- Membership with a skilled organization such as CNA, RNAO or NPAO.
- Maintains competence by participating in the College of Nurses of Ontario’s Quality Assurance requirements.
