DESCRIPTION: In consultation with the Manager, Inpatient Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant Program, the Coordinator, Stem Cell Transplant and the transplant physician, participate in the planning and coordination of outpatient appointments, provide clinical nursing care to stem cell patients, provide education to patients, families and staff, and perform data management functions as required.

Within this role the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston General Hospital strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  • Participate in the planning of outpatient appointments and treatments, e.g. apheresis, stem cell infusion and daily follow‑up care in the Stem Cell Unit.
  • Provide clinical nursing care to stem cell transplant patients, e.g. apheresis for stem cell collection, administration of chemotherapy, transfusion of stem cells, transfusion of blood products or any supportive therapy as required.
  • Monitor patient status pre and post transplant, both as inpatient and outpatient, and consult with the haematology physician and other members of the interdisciplinary team as required.
  • Provide patient, family and staff education with respect to pre and post transplant care and general management of this patient population.
  • Adhere to the worker responsibilities as set out in the Occupational Health & Safety Act, hospital safety policies, and dept./unit established procedures at all times. Take corrective action to address a hazard, otherwise report the unresolved hazard to supervisor. Participate in identification and resolution of underlying causes of workplace injury or illness and support safe return to work as per Workplace Safety & Insurance Act.
  • Understand and be familiar with all pertinent KGH policies and procedures including those relating to workplace conduct. Comply with the KGH Commitment to uphold the Workplace Conduct and Reporting of Inappropriate Conduct policy and behave in a manner consistent with the guiding principles and expectations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Eligible for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing required.
  • Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course (PSCB) or De Souza Certification required.
  • CNA certification in Oncology Nursing (CON(C)) preferred.
  • 2 years oncology nursing experience preferred.
  • Recent experience in stem cell transplant preferred.
  • Knowledge and competence in CPR.
  • Advanced competency in administration of chemotherapy required.
  • Advanced competency in the management of central venous access devices required.
  • Advanced competency in apheresis preferred.
  • Advanced competency in stem cell infusion required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and on a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles.
  • Experience with administrative function of outpatient/inpatient clinic required.
  • Proven ability to attend work regularly.
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demand will vary dependent on the specific unit or service. The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands described for that unit of services.
