Secure Treatment Unit provide specialized evidence-based assessment and treatment, including using the Risk Needs Responsivity Model of rehabilitation. The programs include, Assessment and Stabilization Unit, Sexual Behaviours Unit, Trauma Disorders Unit, and Aggressive Behaviour Modulation Unit. All units include a range of psychosocial rehabilitation modules that address individual mental health and criminogenic needs. Treatment focuses on mental health recovery and targeting criminogenic needs to facilitate successful community reintegration and reduce recidivism (reoffending).

• Provide nursing care consistent with College Standards supportive and with patient treatment/rehabilitation goals for people with mental illness who come into conflict with the law
• Develop and implement, in conjunction with interdisciplinary treatment team, creative treatment plans responsive to individual needs
• Identify and coordinate provision of services and resources, in collaboration with affiliate and community partners, advocating to safeguard the person in care’s entitlements and rights
• Lead and guide other nursing staff in daily work assignments, ensuring work is completed to standards
• Provide patient care for the assigned case load
• Manage and direct the care of patients in crisis situations
• Recognize and intervene around emergent health problems
• Provide a safe, therapeutic environment including acute nursing care, crisis management and stabilization
• Prepare and administer medication as per policy and procedure
• Provide direct assistance with symptom management (includes preparation and administering of medications, individual clinical relationship, etc.).
• Supports the delivery of staff education in collaboration with Professional Practice including clinical, operational and administrative (policies and procedures) priorities as required
• Assists in the STU orientation process for all new hires, students, physicians, etc.
• Assist in championing and implementing priority program and group evaluation projects (ie. Resident Satisfaction Surveys, Group Evaluation Forms)
• Collaborate with Program Nurses & EE Nurses in ensuring the delivery of psycho-educational and other nursing groups (including GP’s medical parade) as required
• Support nursing staff during admissions, ensuring completion and verification of nursing assessments
• Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) data input
• Assist with the coordination of unit beds/occupancy in preparation for admissions
• Attend meetings & committees (ex. Clinical Advisory Committee, Clinical Evaluation Team meetings, Program Planning, etc.) as required
• Apply the Mental Health Act and all other legislation related to the practice of psychiatric nursing
• Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Up to 3 months Nursing Experience
• Knowledge of mental health/addiction issues
• Clear understanding of MHA and relevant legislation
• Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing…
