The position is a Relief Staff member in Fred Victor’s Housing Programs. The incumbent will provide shift coverage on a variety of shifts including overnight, day, evening, weekend and holiday assignments, while performing a range of duties that support clients and community members.

What You Will Do
  • Welcome community members and tenants into the program or building.
  • Develop and facilitate groups, community activities, and life‑skills programming, encouraging ongoing participation.
  • Proactively de‑escalate potential conflicts, handle emergencies and crises effectively.
  • Provide tenants and community members with referral information for Fred Victor and external community supports.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as answering phones, supporting food programming, writing letters or notices, making daily entries into Pirouette, and tracking statistical information.
  • Attend daily debriefs and shift changes, and complete incident reports as required.
  • Facilitate regular participant or tenant meetings and conflict‑resolution meetings.
  • Support tenants and community members to maintain housing and address behavior, social isolation, mental health, substance use, hygiene‑related issues.
  • Role‑model professional behavior and positive communication with participants, volunteers and partners.
  • Attend staff meetings, supervisions and training sessions as required.
  • Support harm‑reduction initiatives, including handing out safe‑use kits and responding to overdoses.
  • Assist with meal service, including serving food.
  • Clean and prepare rooms for new intake when required.
  • Assist with pest‑control preparation.
  • Engage community members and tenants, building healthy, positive relationships.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures and uphold Fred Victor values.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
What You Bring to the Team
  • Diploma or degree in Social Services or equivalent with one year of front‑line social services experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of community‑based resources and supports.
  • Open and flexible availability.
  • Experience working directly with diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and a strong commitment to social justice, anti‑racism and anti‑discrimination practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals with mental health and addiction issues.
  • Strong crisis‑intervention, conflict‑resolution and de‑escalation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of trauma‑informed practices.
  • Experience with group facilitation and community‑development programming.
  • Strong knowledge of harm‑reduction tools and resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Fast and sound judgment.
  • Reliability and the ability to work independently, follow direction and communicate professional boundaries.
  • Understanding of systemic causes of homelessness and discrimination.
  • Planning, prioritization and adaptability.
  • Required certifications: CPI;
    First Aid/CPR; anti‑oppression/anti‑racism;
    Suicide Intervention; overdose prevention.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to unpredictable behavior, unpleasant odors, bodily fluids and pests.
  • Potentially threatening situations.
  • Stressful and emotionally challenging work with vicarious trauma, grief and compassion fatigue.
  • Travel to Fred Victor program and administration locations, primarily by public transportation.
  • Work on weekends and, as needed, mornings, evenings or overnights.
  • Opportunity to work with pets.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Hourly rate of $22.65.
  • 8% vacation pay.
