RN, Registered Nurse - ICU - PRN

Overview

The Intensive Care Unit is a 10‑bed modern unit specializing in the care of critically ill adults and elderly adults. Special procedures include intubation with mechanical ventilator management, arterial lines, TEE, insertion of temporary pacemakers and external pacing, and cardiac drips. We average an 8‑day census and monitor up to 24 telemetry units. Frequent diagnoses are myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, COPD, septic shock, CVA, overdoses, hypertensive crisis, pneumonia, and DKA.

Common surgical conditions include appendectomy, exploratory laparotomy, cholecystectomy (laparoscopic and open), bowel resection, hysterectomy, and amputation.

The Spohn Kleberg ICU team is known for expertise, loyalty, teamwork and dedication. They mentor new nurses, provide patient care, exceed Press Ganey scores, participate in committees, and create a working family.

The competent Nurse practices independently, demonstrates an awareness of all relevant aspects, provides routine and complex care, manages contingencies, makes assignments and delegates to manage the clinical situation.

• Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, provides nursing care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation for assigned patients.
• Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patient and families in accordance with their level of practice.
• Using the appropriate protocol, administers medications and treatments; monitors for side‑effects and effectiveness of the treatment prescribed.
• Documents patient history, symptoms, medication, and care given.
• Assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members and/or caregivers; identifies issues and resources.

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, preferred.
• One year of experience in a related nursing specialty preferred.
• BLS required.
• RN License in state of employment or compact.
• Current ACLS certification required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – No grace period; AHA or Red Cross accepted at time of hire.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Within 30 days of hire for experienced associates; within 90 days for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• Pediatric Life Support (PALS) – Within 30 days of hire for experienced associates; within 90 days for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) – Within 60 days of hire for experienced associates; within 18 months for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR) – Within 60 days of hire for experienced associates; within 18 months for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Within 30 days of hire for experienced associates; within 60 days for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• AWHONN INTERMEDIATE FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) – Within 30 days of hire for experienced associates; within 60 days for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
• STABLE (Neonatal Education) – Within 30 days of hire for experienced associates; within 60 days for new graduates and associates new to the specialty.
