Commissioning Engineer

Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for Commissioning Engineer on an 12 month contract based in Scotland.

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer with valid SSE authorisations (tickets) to support the safe commissioning of electrical infrastructure across SSE networks and associated projects. The role involves planning, executing, and documenting commissioning activities while ensuring full compliance with SSE, statutory, and client safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

* Plan, coordinate, and carry out commissioning activities on electrical plant and systems (HV/LV) in line with project specifications and SSE standards.

* Act in accordance with SSE safety rules and procedures at all times.

* Undertake duties as an Authorised Person (AP) and/or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) as permitted by held authorisations.

* Prepare and review commissioning plans, method statements, risk assessments, and test documentation.

* Carry out functional testing, protection testing, and system energisation activities.

* Liaise with SSE representatives, project managers, designers, and contractors to ensure smooth handover.

* Identify and resolve technical issues during commissioning, escalating where necessary.

* Produce accurate commissioning reports, test results, and handover documentation.

* Support outage planning, switching schedules, and permit control where authorised.

* Ensure all works comply with relevant legislation, standards, and site-specific requirements.

Requirements

* Valid SSE authorisations (tickets) – AP and/or SAP (essential depending on role level).

* Relevant electrical engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent experience).

* Proven experience commissioning electrical systems within transmission or distribution environments.

* Sound knowledge of SSE safety rules, procedures, and documentation.

* Strong understanding of HV/LV systems, protection schemes, and commissioning practices.

Desirable

* SAP authorisation across multiple SSE sites or regions.

* Experience with substations, renewables integration, or major infrastructure projects.

* Current UK driving licence.

Skills & Experience

* Demonstrable experience in a commissioning role within the UK power sector.

* Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and protection settings.

* Excellent safety awareness and a methodical approach to work.

* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders.

* Competent in producing clear technical reports and documentation.

* Flexible approach to working hours, including outages and site work.
