The NAI is responsible for administering direct patient care and performing other duties deemed necessary to insure optimal patient care, under the direction and supervision of a professional nurse. The NAI performs duties, such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, or moving patients or changing linens.

• Provide direct patient care services to patients and families.
• Conduct interpersonal relationships in a manner that projects a positive image of the department and hospital.
• Ensure that contacts with other health care members are friendly, helpful, and courteous.

Education Requirements:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Professional Experience Requirement:
None required.

Licensure/Registration/Certification:
Certified by the N.

C. Department of Facility Services as a NAI. BCLS Certification.

Skills and Abilities

Requirements:
Good interpersonal, communication and observation skills are essential. Understanding of patient care needs according to developmental stages for various age groups.

Work Environment:

• Exposure to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and other infectious diseases requiring use of protective equipment; exposure to other hazards such as radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards based on departments.
• Possible exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

Physical Requirements:

• Standing, sitting, walking and working throughout the shift.
• Lifting, pulling, turning and pushing patients daily. Ability to use appropriate Safe-Patient Handling equipment.
• Visual acuity, auditory and verbal skills necessary.
• Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
