Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Performs difficult semiskilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities, buildings, grounds, cemeteries, and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned Crew Supervisor. Full supervision is exercised over subordinate Maintenance Workers.
Performing a variety of semiskilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of public facilities, grounds, streets, utilities and related facilities.
- Performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing sidewalks and driveways; spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces, assists with concrete work; digs trenches and ditches, as needed.
- Builds and sets forms and finishes concrete; patches new and old concrete work.
- Removes damaged section of pavement; fills holes with patching materials and tamps or rolls patches. Transports crews, materials and equipment to and from job sites; oversees crews engaged in building and grounds maintenance; trains subordinte workers in correct methods of performing assigned work.
- Performs a variety of general grounds keeping and landscaping duties.
- Opens and closes graves; places sod and reseeds grassy areas; assists visitors in locating graves as needed.
- Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, weed eats, trims trees and shrubs; performs related landscaping duties in maintenance.
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on various pieces of equipment; prepares and submits vehicle maintenance and maintenance expenditure reports.
- Trains new employees and assigned part-time personnel; receives and assigns work assignments to assigned personnel; prepares and maintains time sheets for assigned personnel.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Operates dump trucks, back hoe, front end loader, chainsaw, concrete saw, jackhammer, asphalt roller, weed eater, stump grinder, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures.
- General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
- Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to supervise the work of subordinates.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in public utilities and public works facilities maintenance, repair and construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 6 months experience preferred.
- May require possession of or ability to obtain specific certifications depending on area of assignment.
- Possession of a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work requires depth perception and color perception;
vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities;
work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
work is generally in a very quiet location (e.g. park trail, storage or file room).
