Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Utility Technician
Responsibilities
- Performs difficult technical work installing, maintaining and repairing specialized machinery and equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plant, maintaining storage tanks, water pump stations and sewer lift stations, and related work as required.
- Maintaining and repairing treatment plant equipment, storage tanks and pump and lift stations; repairing and replacing pumps; adjusting equipment to ensure optimum operation.
- Inspects, maintains and repairs equipment and facilities including well, pump stations and storage tank; treats water with chlorine and fluoride as required.
- Adjusts equipment to maintain proper water flow; records readings from water meter; collects water samples from designated points.
- Makes minor adjustments to equipment and notifies supervisor of need for repair work.
- Performs preventive maintenance such as checking and lubricating bearings and gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, checking packing temperatures, maintaining pump valves, blowers, screens, generators, etc.
- Observes overhaul of water pump station machinery and equipment; installs and adjusts chemical feeding systems.
- Replaces fuses and performs minor electrical repairs.
- Removes and cleans debris from well sites; performs general grounds keeping and landscaping duties such as mowing, weeding, raking, painting, replacing shingles, etc.; performs minor carpentry work; cleans and maintains division vehicles.
- Assists with the installation and removal of water meters.
- Performs related tasks as required.
ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to work under adverse conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in mechanical maintenance including repair and maintenance of pumping equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 1 year experience preferred.
Special Requirements- Possession of or ability to obtain Grade II Collections, WWTP Operators Certification, Grade C Well and confined space certifications depending on departmental assignment.
- Possession or ability to obtain state operator certification in related field required.
- Possession of valid NC drivers license. Possession or ability to obtain CDL preferred.
Work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting, speaking or hearing, frequently using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands; work requires depth perception, color perception, close vision, ability to adjust focus; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring device operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme hear (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment;
work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth- moving equipment).
