Job Summary

To be responsible for the delivery of the highest standards of specialist palliative care, support and advice to patients.

Main Duties
  • Have knowledge of and abide by the NMC Code:
    Standards of Conduct, Performance, and Ethics for nurses and midwives.
  • Maintain confidentiality in respect of information concerning patients and their relatives at all times.
  • Effectively assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for each allocated patient as determined by the nurse‑in‑charge.
  • Ensure effective communication with the medical team and other health‑care professionals when providing individualised nursing care.
  • Ensure effective communication with the Clinical Director.
  • Set the highest possible standards of care considering the holistic needs of the patient and his/her family/carer.

Willowbrook Hospice is a purpose built independent hospice opened in 1997. It is an adult hospice caring for patients with specialist palliative care needs, serving the community of St Helens and Knowsley. It was built with the support of local people. Willowbrook Hospice is not just a building, it is a way of caring for people. The Hospice works to improve the lives of people who have a life‑limiting or terminal illness, helping them to live well before they die.

Willowbrook Hospice not only takes care of people’s physical needs but also looks after their emotional, spiritual and social needs. It supports carers, family members and close friends, both during a person’s illness and in bereavement.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop specialist knowledge to provide advice and counselling skills to patients and carers on the holistic needs that arise with terminal illness.
  • Ensure the needs of the bereaved are fully met by the most appropriate individual or external agencies if required.
  • Participate in areas of nursing research and apply findings of pertinent research and nursing practice to the workplace.
  • Adhere to and ensure that the requirements are achieved.
  • Demonstrate organisational/time management skills relevant to the position.
  • Recognise and respond to stress and anxiety in self, colleagues and volunteers.
  • Deal promptly and sensitively with complaints, resolving where possible, and referring to the Senior Nurse in charge.
  • Liaise with all external organisations as appropriate in undertaking care management of patients.
  • Have knowledge of current Fire and Health and Safety Policies and ensure they are practised correctly.
  • Be actively involved with staff meetings, working parties and liaison with voluntary and multi‑professional services as required.
  • Participate in discussions during multi‑professional ward meetings, presenting patients as appropriate.
  • Be involved and have knowledge of audit and continuous quality improvement.
  • Ensure that all Hospice supplies are used effectively and economically at all times.
  • Maintain a personal commitment to the expansion and development of professional skills and knowledge in line with NMC requirements and those developments related to annual individual performance review.
  • Understand and comply with the policies and practices of the organisation.
  • Observe the organisation’s No Smoking policy.
  • Attend and comply with mandatory training requirements annually, plus any other training as deemed appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality in respect of all information.
  • Act as an effective representative of Willowbrook Hospice, promoting a positive company image.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post at the request of the IPU Manager or other Willowbrook Hospice Manager.
