Job Summary

Responsible for the overall supervision, daily operations, and management of the Professional Coding & Reimbursement Department in collaboration with the Professional Coding & Reimbursement Manager. Promotes effective, efficient, and compliant assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes that are supported by the medical record documentation. Oversees and manages coder productivity, manages coder workflows, promotes coder training and development, plans and performs quality assurance reviews of professional coding team to support the accurate and compliant revenue capture for professional services.

Collaborates with the billing department to understand denial trends and incorporates into coder processes and workflows to optimize reimbursement for professional services from third parties. Serves as a recognized liaison and coding resource to physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals, department and clinic staff and leadership and other key stake holders in the organization.

Primary Duties
  • Leads, oversees and directs staff performing coding functions for professional services in multiple settings and specialties.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and training materials related to the education and compliance of coding staff to maximize productivity and performance expectations
  • Monitors adherence to productivity and quality metrics and motivates and educates coding staff to ensure that standards are met.
  • Develops and reports key department metrics and results to the Professional Coding & Reimbursement Manager and other leaders on a regular basis.
  • Responds to staff questions on complex coding issues and provides resources or training to further coding knowledge.
  • Maintains and continually enhances coding skills, stays current with changes in codes, coding guidelines and regulations.
  • Works collaboratively with the Professional Coding & Reimbursement Manager to assist in program development.
  • Serves as an organization-wide resource and subject matter expert in coding CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 codes for professional services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • License, Certification, Education or Experience REQUIRED for the position
    • American Academy of Procedural Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.
    • 5 years of professional coding experience in a multi-specialty medical group setting.
    • Extensive knowledge in ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding for professional services.
    • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology and coding and sequencing guidelines.
    • Comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology and disease processes.
    DESIRED for the position
    • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare management or related field.
    • AHIMA or AAPC specialty certification(s).
    • Experience managing or supervising a professional coding team.
    • Clear understanding of various reimbursement methodologies with knowledge of payer billing requirements.
    • General knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle including familiarity with reimbursement methodology, charge capture and billing processes.
