Deputy Utility Manager – Electrical Distribution
Los Alamos County, NM (19,675) is seeking a highly skilled Deputy Utility Manager for its Electric Distribution Division in the Department of Public Utilities (DPU). This recruitment follows the retirement of the previous deputy manager who served 24 years with the county.
OverviewLos Alamos County is a vibrant community supported by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the largest employer in the county with an annual budget of $2 billion. The county offers high quality public schools, a strong higher education presence, and access to three national parks and numerous recreational opportunities. LA County’s public utilities division maintains a reliable electric distribution system that serves approximately 8,000 meters and is committed to sustainability, electrification, and distributed energy resources.
ResponsibilitiesThe Deputy Utility Manager – Electrical Distribution will lead the Electric Distribution Division, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to achieve the following objectives:
- Assist DPU in implementing Board of Public Utilities and County Council environmental sustainability goals and objectives.
- Develop and implement a plan to upgrade electric supply and distribution systems to meet the needs of all-electric buildings, electric vehicles, and distributed energy resources.
- Support electrification and solar installations in the community.
- Maintain system reliability and provide a high standard of customer service.
- Strengthen existing partnerships with utilities, municipalities, and community organizations.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. Master’s Degree is preferred.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in NM or ability to acquire within 12 months.
- Seven (7) years of combined experience in engineering related to power distribution, with at least Four (4) years of supervisory or management experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a non‑cleared U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) badge.
- Project Management Certification is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in electric distribution design, operations, and maintenance.
- Experience working in a unionized environment is a plus.
Salary range: $128,520 to $209,275. The county offers a generous benefits and retirement package, details of which are available at Los Alamos County Employee Benefits. A relocation allowance is also available.
