Light Equipment Operator

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled vehicle and light equipment operation in the construction, maintenance, and repair tasks associated with County infrastructure development and public property management. Functions may include work on roads and bridges, solid waste, utilities, and public works installation, maintenance, and operations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Operate light vehicles and equipment (e.g., flatbed, compactors, back‑hoes, loaders, chippers, dozers, drag lines, forklifts, graders, stripers, rollers, trenchers, hydraulic excavators, semi‑tractor trailers, truck‑mounted cranes, and other heavy equipment).
  • Identify potential hazards for the general public during installation, maintenance, and repair projects and determine appropriate equipment operating procedures.
  • Perform labor‑intensive, moderately complex construction, grounds maintenance, and repair work independently or as part of a crew in the management and care of County infrastructure and properties.
  • Participate in the construction, renovation, and restoration of streets, bridges, solid waste, utility systems, and public works landscapes and grounds.
  • Operate tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and in compliance with prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Set up work‑site safety (e.g., barricades, cones), prepare for excavation and confined‑space entry, and perform traffic control according to uniform work‑zone safety standards.
  • Inspect completed work for proper operation, adherence to work orders, and safety.
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep of equipment and machinery (e.g., lubricate, service, fuel, and wash vehicles and equipment).
  • Attend safety meetings and participate in safety inspections.
  • Perform inspection and recording duties as prescribed by department, County, State, and related regulatory standards, policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Perform duties as assigned or necessary that are related or logically assigned to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience:

    One (1) year of responsible experience in the operation of a wide variety of construction, maintenance, and repair vehicles, light equipment, and machinery; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Miscellaneous
  • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Florida Driver’s License (Passenger, Hazardous Materials, and/or Tanker endorsement may be required depending on area of assignments).
  • Class B is acceptable with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within three (3) months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and related documentation.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles, trucks, light construction equipment, and machinery, and other gasoline and diesel‑driven motors.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas, and hydraulic‑powered tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures.
  • Physical labor skills (reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of moderately heavy objects).
  • Knowledge of hazards involved and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 °F for extended periods.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.
Physical Demand Requirements
  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements exceed medium work.
