Position: BI358B - Animals: Form and Function (Winter 2027)
Location: Waterloo

Position Summary

:

A comparative investigation of animal anatomy and physiology using a systems approach (respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory, movement). Central themes focus on homeostasis and the linkages between the environment and anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Have a broad fundamental knowledge and appreciation of animal physiology.
  • Understand the functions of important physiological systems, including the nervous, endocrine, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and reproductive systems.
  • Understand how these separate systems can interact and yield integrated physiological responses to challenges, such as exercise, changing environmental conditions, and fasting and feeding.
  • Be able to distinguish some of the key physiological differences between major groups of vertebrate and invertebrate animals.
  • Be able to analyze and produce a written report on a theoretical experiment and observations in physiology.

    Overview of physiology; energy metabolism; homeostasis; cell signalling and membrane transport; neurophysiology; neurophysiology and endocrinology; muscle physiology; circulatory physiology; circulatory physiology: water and ion balance; water and ion balance and respiratory physiology; respiratory physiology and digestive physiology; digestive and reproductive physiology
