Role Overview
The Head of Packaging is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing all operational, people, and strategic activities within the Packaging Department. This position ensures safe, efficient, and high‑quality packaging operations from product receipt through to finished goods. As a key member of the site’s extended leadership team, the Head of Packaging drives performance, continuous improvement, and alignment with global and regional packaging excellence standards.
Key Responsibilities
People & Leadership
Lead and inspire the Packaging Department as a visible role model across the site
Ensure compliance with all HSE, food safety, hygiene, and regulatory standards
Implement Group and Country HR policies and manage union/workers council agreements
Develop leaders and teams; ensure skills, capabilities, and staffing align with business needs
Oversee performance management processes, including objective setting and regular appraisals
Align workforce planning with operational demand
Process Management
Maintain effective PMS, reporting systems, and standard meeting structures
Build and enforce packaging standards through standard work, process confirmation, and training
Apply Carlsberg Excellence methodologies to resolve daily performance gaps
Contribute packaging expertise to site strategy and tactical implementation plans (TIP)
Performance Management
Set and manage departmental OPEX and CAPEX budgets
Own and track key departmental KPIs (OEE, B&D, LEF, CO, loss, pack quality KPIs, etc.)
Lead or support continuous improvement and cost‑saving initiatives
Share and promote best practices within the site and across the wider Carlsberg network
Drive the development of Carlsberg Excellence within the Packaging function
Functional Packaging Leadership
Ensure full compliance with Group COM Packaging standards
Support global initiatives (e.g., VIPEX, NPD, capital projects)
Act as owner of the Autonomous Maintenance Pillar
Champion improvement tools such as GEMBA, Kaizen, Pit Stop, and 5S
Approve weekly packaging and maintenance plans
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
Establish clear expectations and alignment with internal and external stakeholders
Communicate performance vs. plans, and identify obstacles and solutions
Collaborate with key partners including Brewing & Processing, Maintenance, H&S, QA, Procurement, Controlling, Legal, Supply Chain, Planning, HR, Trade Unions, and global/regional Packaging teams
Manage relationships with third‑party suppliers and contractors
Key
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
University degree in Engineering or a relevant technical discipline.
Managerial experience in a high‑speed packaging environment.
Minimum 5 years of strategic leadership experience in a production environment.
Demonstrated experience developing people, managing budgets, and delivering improvements through Lean/TPM.
Technical & Functional Skills
Strong knowledge of packaging operations, KPIs, and standard methodologies.
Familiarity with Carlsberg Excellence or similar continuous improvement systems.
Ability to manage complex processes, standards, and cross‑functional workflows.
