Position Summary:
The Mechanical Designer is responsible for developing detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, and manufacturing documentation for large, welded assemblies, fabricated components, and related mechanical systems. The role will also design and develop tooling, weld fixtures, assembly fixtures, material handling solutions, and other manufacturing aids required to support production. Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations, the Mechanical Designer will translate customer designs and engineering requirements into accurate, practical, and cost-effective manufacturing solutions.
The successful candidate will have strong experience with Solid Works, welded fabrication, design for manufacturability, and the preparation of production-ready drawings for a heavy manufacturing environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings for large, welded steel assemblies and components.
- Create production-ready drawings including weld symbols, dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, material specifications, and fabrication requirements.
- Develop designs using plate, structural shapes, formed components, machined components, and purchased hardware.
- Apply practical knowledge of welding, cutting/burning, forming, machining, and assembly processes when developing designs.
- Review designs for weld accessibility, distortion, tolerance stack-up, assembly sequence, material utilization, and overall manufacturability.
- Design weld fixtures, assembly fixtures, locating and clamping systems, gauges, material handling devices, carts, and other production tooling required to support manufacturing.
- Develop tooling concepts from production requirements and work directly with manufacturing personnel to validate designs on the shop floor.
- Apply sound locating, clamping, tolerance, accessibility, ergonomics, and mistake-proofing principles when designing fixtures and tooling.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings and BOMs for internally and externally fabricated tooling.
- Support fixture prove-out, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement after implementation.
- Modify existing tooling and fixtures to improve safety, quality, ergonomics, throughput, repeatability, and ease of use.
