Job Synopsis

The Thrift Team Member supports the sorting, pricing, and movement of donated goods from receiving through to the retail floor, contributing to an efficient and customer-focused Thrift Shop. Working collaboratively with staff and volunteers, the role helps create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment while supporting volunteer participation and day-to-day shop operations. This position contributes to MCC Thrift’s mission of stewardship, community engagement, and raising funds to support MCC’s global work.

This is a 3 month contract, 37.5 hours weekly.

Additional Details

This role is based at MCC Thrift & Gift in 59 Church St. W, Elmira - Ontario. Hours of work will include day, evening and Saturday shifts.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Background Check upon hire.

Qualifications
  • All MCC workers are expected to exhibit a commitment to: a personal Christian faith and discipleship; active participation in a Christian church or Christian community; and nonviolent peacemaking.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to engage respectfully with volunteers, customers, donors, and diverse communities
  • Ability to create a positive, welcoming, and team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., MS Outlook and Word)
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and Saturdays
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs., exert 11-25 lbs. of force frequently, stand or walk intermittently for 7.5+ hours, and repeatedly bend, stoop, and reach (including use of stool or ladder)
  • A Valid G Drivers License and the ability to drive
Preferred
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Experience in a retail, warehouse, or customer service environment
  • Familiarity with second- hand retail operations, including pricing or product knowledge ( e.g. brands, antiques, and collectibles)

Customer Service & Shop Operations
  • Support the sorting, pricing, and merchandising of donated goods from intake to retail floor
  • Provide excellent customer service in all interactions with customers, donors, and volunteers, contributing to a positive and welcoming shop experience
  • Operate point-of-sale systems and address or elevate issues as needed
  • Respond to questions, concerns, or conflicts professionally and refer as appropriate
  • Provide cross-coverage and support to team members as needed
Volunteer Support
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to volunteers, fostering a safe, positive, and engaging work environment
  • Help orient volunteers to tasks and reinforce safe and effective work practices
Health & Safety
  • Promote and follow safe work practices, including proper lifting techniques and use of equipment
  • Maintain clean, organized work spaces that meet organizational and legislative safety standards

Base salary: $24.35 - Salary stated is an hourly rate. 6 % vacation pay is added to each pay deposit.
