Qualifications - Required:
Completion of a formal Operating Room Technician course and 1 year of previous surgical experience; basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
Lic/Reg/Cert - Surgery Technician Certification or Oregon LPN license.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands
Medium to heavy physical demands. Knowledge of and ability to operate all equipment used. Ability to stand within a limited area most of the shift. Ability to stoop frequently; push/pull up to 100 pounds frequently; lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Excellent eye/hand coordination; ability to work under stress and time constraints. Ability to work within a controlled traffic pattern. Capable of providing emergency patient care.
- Scrub surgical procedures; collaborate effectively with physicians, especially during emergencies.
- Perform Surgical Scrub duties under RN supervision, following AORN standards:
- Scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
- Maintaining a sterile environment during setup and procedures.
- Setting up tables, instruments, and supplies per scheduled operations.
- Assisting with patient preparation and draping.
- Anticipating and assisting with the needs of the surgeon, including instrument, suture, sponge, and supply management.
- Monitoring patient physical status and assisting with emergencies.
- Performing sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN per policy.
- Assisting in the care and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Applying dressings and casts as needed.
- Cleaning the surgical suite after each case.
- Knowledge of and safe use of medications on the surgical field.
- Potentially assuming circulating nurse duties under RN supervision.
- Obtaining supplies and special equipment for patients, surgeons, or anesthesiologists.
- Maintaining correct patient positioning during procedures.
- Assisting with patient movement from the surgical table.
- Upholding confidentiality of hospital and patient information.
- Adhering to OSHA Safety Policies and Universal Precautions.
- Responding effectively in emergency surgical situations.
- Maintaining professional and effective working relationships.
- Adapting quickly to change; flexible in staffing and emergency standby roles.
- Demonstrating competence aligned with organizational mission, vision, values, and strategic plan through ongoing education and skill development.
- Completing annual orthopedic education topics for Hip and Knee program certification as directed.
- Meeting clinical competencies for hip and knee certification to care for relevant patients.
