Qualifications
  • Typing, word processing or data entry skills at 50 wpm
  • Excellent spelling, math and problem solving skills
  • Excellent pronunciation and communication skills
  • Ability to organize work and attend to detail
  • 1 year clerical experience including telephone skills
  • Previous switchboard/PBX experience
  • Must be able to walk, lift, bend and follow written and verbal communication
  • 20/25 vision with correction and good hearing
  • Preferred:
    Medical terminology
Physical/Mental Demands

Sitting long periods of time in a confined area, moving around the department to sort mail, walking to designated areas while pushing a mail cart, handling stressful situations (code calls). Must be able to concentrate with constant interruptions and noise. Requires 20/25 vision with correction and good hearing.

Essential Job Functions
  • Receive and transfer hospital telephone calls using the telephone switchboard console
  • Perform routine, emergency and code paging according to established procedures
  • Operate in‑house pager systems
  • Professionally page overhead
  • Explain hospital regulations, such as visiting hours and department locations, and transfer calls to appropriate departments
  • Monitor hospital environment system alarms and security system, and notify responsible department for corrective action
  • Maintain complete and accurate logs of all telecommunication within the department when needed with legible handwriting
  • Receive and update additional physicians for patient records
  • Assist patients, visitors, and hospital staff with telephone and paging procedures
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of departmental and medical center policies and procedures
  • Assist in the training of department staff
  • Perform answering service for various departments
  • Understand ancillary department functions and procedures/protocols
  • Assist with department evaluations
  • Assist with hiring of new employees, interviews and selections when requested
  • Maintain availability for call in on all shifts
  • Maintain willingness and ability to learn and perform extra duties as assigned
  • Maintain competency in all position responsibilities
  • Sort both in‑house and outside mail brought in by external couriers; deliver mail once a day Monday through Friday between 4 & 5 PM
  • Work as a team player with the department’s best interest in mind
