Position Overview /DutiesThe Rock Island District's Operations Division is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of the District’s civil works projects. This includes the management of 3 flood control reservoirs in Iowa—Saylorville Lake, Lake Red Rock, and Coralville Lake. We are seeking a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor at the Lake Red Rock Project to lead a maintenance crew of approximately 6–8 people involved in the Operations and Maintenance of flood control structures (such as sluice gates, Tainter gates, and pump stations), buildings, roads, trails, grounds, and other project facilities.
As a Supervisor, your responsibilities will also include:
- On a week-to-week basis, plans and coordinates work in conjunction with the Lake Manager and establishes priorities and deadlines and sequence of work for the maintenance crew.
- Plans, directs, and reviews the work of subordinates involved in the operations and maintenance of flood control structures (such as sluice gates, Tainter gates, and pump stations), buildings, roads, trails, grounds, and other project facilities.
- Supervises a workforce in a variety of trades, including carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, masonry, welding, painting, and heavy equipment operation. Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures; instructs subordinates in new procedures and provides advice when problems arise.
- Utilizes the Facility and Equipment Maintenance (FEM) system and ensures work orders, preventative maintenance (PM) plans, etc., are accurate. Works with the Facility Services Assistant to ensure work orders, PMs, new assets, etc., are entered into FEM system in a timely and accurate manner.
- Performs a wide range of administrative and personnel management functions, including employee selection, performance management, approval of leave, and handling disciplinary actions.
- Ensures strict adherence to safety regulations and fosters a culture of safety within the team. Ensures Activity Hazards Analysis (AHA’s) are reviewed prior to work, if applicable. Inspects hazards and ensures that employees are using safety equipment and are following safe working procedures. Makes safety a priority by leading daily safety meetings and ensures safety meetings are recorded in the district safety reporting system.
- Coordinates work with other units and contractors to ensure timely completion of projects.
- Operates flood control structures and may be required to operate heavy equipment and motorboats as needed.
Lake Red Rock is Iowa's largest lake with more than 15,000 acres of water and 35,000 acres of land for visitors to enjoy. Located on the Des Moines River just 45 miles southeast, and downriver, of the city of Des Moines, Iowa, the reservoir collects runoff and drainage from a 12,320 square-mile area in Iowa and southern Minnesota. This protects communities and agricultural lands downstream from the Red Rock Dam.

High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Experience RequirementOne year of specialized experience equivalent to the WS-08 grade level in the Federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience for this position include:
1) Leading, directing, or supervising a maintenance workforce performing work in various trades such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, and heavy equipment operation;
2) Planning, scheduling, and assigning maintenance and repair work for a complex facility or project;
3) Operating and maintaining large mechanical systems, such as those found in dams, power plants, flood control projects;
4) Implementing and enforcing workplace safety programs and regulations.
