Role Overview

Interstate Mechanical is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator in Training to join our Preconstruction team. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn the estimating process for commercial and industrial mechanical projects while developing the technical, analytical, and communication skills needed for long-term success as a Mechanical Estimator. This is an entry point into a long‑term career in estimation for someone with practical field experience who would like to transition from the field into pre‑construction.

The Estimator in Training will work closely with experienced Estimators and Project Managers to learn how to review plans and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, assist with pricing, and support bid preparation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist senior Estimators with quantity takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications
  • Learn to analyze project documents to identify scope requirements and potential risks
  • Support the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates
  • Help solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing
  • Maintain organized bid files and estimating documentation
  • Participate in pre‑bid meetings and internal review meetings as needed
  • Learn company estimating software, tools, and processes
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure smooth handoff from estimating to operations
What You Bring
  • Plumbing and piping experience, preferably at an apprentice or journeyman plumber level or above.
  • Strong math skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and basic computer applications or computer aptitude.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills
  • Willingness to learn and receive feedback
  • Strong communication skills and a team‑oriented mindset.
Physical and Work Environment
  • Office‑based role with frequent site visits.
  • Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with potential for extended hours as needed.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, mechanical environments, and construction sites; safety procedures and PPE provided.
