Job DescriptionThe Haslam College of Business (HCB) Undergraduate Programs Office provides comprehensive academic advising services for approximately 9,800 undergraduate students. The college has a collaborative advising team focused on assisting students in developing and implementing sound educational plans consistent with their values and academic and career goals.
The Academic Advisor position is an exempt, 12‑month, full‑time, non‑tenure track staff role that provides an exciting opportunity to be part of UT’s strategic advising plan that integrates academic and career advising with self‑exploration, leadership development, and experiential learning.
The number of honors students enrolling in the Haslam College of Business continues to grow, and we are specifically seeking an academic advisor interested in advising this specific population. The successful candidate will be part of a team of honors advisors dedicated to supporting this growing population.
Responsibilities- Develop knowledge and understanding of the HCB undergraduate curriculum, majors, minors, and collaterals/concentrations
- Assist students in the exploration of their goals, interests, strengths, values, and concerns through positive open‑ended questions and intentional advising strategies
- Educate students about curricular requirements, academic standards, and academic milestones related to the business degree
- Assist students throughout their undergraduate experience in developing academic plans that meet goals and future aspirations
- Communicate effectively with assigned advisees and explain university and college academic policies and procedures
- Teach students how to evaluate degree progress
- Refer students to college and campus resources, programs, and support systems that promote academic success, career development, experiential learning, and engagement
- Facilitate the petitioning process for students pursuing curriculum exceptions
- Utilize technology that supports advising practice (such as Banner, DARS, Navigate/Salesforce, other IT sources and internet programs, etc.)
- Conduct first‑year and transfer student orientation advising sessions
- Teach section(s) of BUAD 100/107, a seminar course in the Haslam Leaders series curriculum, designed for first‑time freshmen
- Establish a professional development plan in collaboration with supervisor
Required Qualifications
- Education:
Master’s degree (or degree can be earned within one academic term of employment) - Experience:
Advisor 1 – experience in working with a diverse group of students in a collegiate setting; advising and/or student development (e.g., mentoring or academic coaching); preferred experience in academic advising in higher education - Senior Advisor – 2 years of professional experience in an academic advising or related position at the college/university level; involvement in a professional association related to academic advising/student development; active engagement within a campus community
- Knowledge, skills, abilities:
Advisor 1 – ability to relate effectively to a diverse university community, strong written and oral communication skills, appropriate computer and IT skills, demonstrated organizational skills, and ability to handle simultaneous projects;
Senior Advisor – proven written and verbal communication skills, ability to utilize IT related to advising, demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and student development theories and approaches, proven best‑practice approach to academic advising, knowledge of federal, state, university, and college policies and curricular requirements, skills in communication, judgment, research, and processing data
