Project OverviewThe Knoxville Engineering Office is the engineering execution center for Bechtel’s Nuclear, Security & Environmental business line, providing design development and support to multiple large complex projects across government and commercial sectors.
Job SummaryAs a Fire Protection Engineer, you will develop design and procurement documents for fire protection systems, perform hazard analysis, review contractor submittals, assist in construction testing, and promote fire safety programs. Projects will involve DOD/DOE and other government works.
Major Responsibilities- Execute assignments in fire protection engineering for various projects.
- Participate in design and development of fire protection systems and equipment (sprinkler, fire pump, alarm, mass notification) per applicable codes.
- Develop deliverables: calculations, design/Construction drawings, hazard analysis reports, system design descriptions, requisition specifications.
- Analyze life safety requirements for buildings, including code compliance, occupancy determination, load calculations and egress analysis.
- Perform on‑site evaluations and assist with final system testing.
- Provide technical guidance in reviewing engineering analyses and judgments for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protections and penetration fire stops.
- Attend pre‑award, post‑award and construction meetings; monitor construction progress and resolve issues.
- Assist in scope, cost or schedule adjustments in collaboration with contractors and stakeholders.
- Perform code‑required special inspections or required observations for construction quality assurance.
- Implement programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety per OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements.
- Support coordination of fire protection issues with internal and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering (or related) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience.
- U.S. citizen.
- Ability to complete a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Knowledge of fire, life safety and building codes – NFPA, UL, FM.
- Experience working towards passing the NCEES fire protection engineering examination to become a registered PE.
- Experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial or nuclear facility with strong background in suppression and alarm system design.
